News2010-08-03 Slow service due to vacation time Since a part of the GABI-Kat staff goes to vacation in August, delivery of seed might be a bit delayed between beginning of August and middle of September. The delay may also extend to answering Emails send to the info mailbox, as well as to taking up new seed requests.

2010-03-10 Nature News article: Plant biologists fear for A. thaliana project
2010-02-18 New donation of GABI-Kat seeds to NASC A total of 51 newly confirmed GABI-Kat lines have been donated to NASC. This donation batch contains 654 individual T3 seed bags (51 T3-sets). In total, 7.949 T3-sets of which each represents a single GABI-Kat line have been donated so far. These lines cover 8.030 confirmed insertion alleles. Together with NASC, we have detected some small errors with individual lines in former donations which have been corrected. These corrections explain why the numbers do not "add up" exactly.
2010-01-21 New donation of GABI-Kat seeds to NASC A total of 100 newly confirmed GABI-Kat lines have been donated to NASC. This donation batch contains 1.280 individual T3 seed bags (100 T3-sets). In total, 7.899 T3-sets of which each represents a single GABI-Kat line have been donated so far. These lines cover 7.991 confirmed insertion alleles. You can use SimpleSearch to check for the confirmation sequences of these insertion alleles which cover in general the LB::genome fusion.
2009-12-18 Delivery of more seed delayed to January 2010 During this week, the last seeds of newly confirmed lines have left the lab for 2009. Since the coming holidays may interfere with international delivery, the next seed will be put into the mail in the second week of 2010. We wish all our users a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year, and GREAT phenotypes for the experiments in 2010!
2009-12-11 New donation of GABI-Kat seeds to NASC A total of 75 newly confirmed GABI-Kat lines have been donated to NASC. This donation batch contains 1.023 individual T3 seed bags (75 T3-sets). In total, 7.799 T3-sets of which each represents a single GABI-Kat line have been donated so far. These lines cover 7.887 confirmed insertion alleles.
2009-11-22 Nature News article on TAIR funding cuts The article and the comments clearly indicate that a loss of TAIR will have a significant and strongly negative impact on plant biology. Also GABI-Kat relies on data from TAIR and from MATDB (the Ath database version from MIPS/GSF/HZM). The recent update of SimpleSearch also covered updating links to TAIR and MATDB, and removed dead links to TIRG websites. A stable reference database for THE model organism in plant biology is required, and it should not be just one!
2009-11-17 Update of the SimpleSearch GABI-Kat data browser The update addressed the accessibility of information regarding insertions which failed in our confirmation process, and also the visualization of already confirmed and donated alleles versus insertions that still need to be confirmed. We have changed the color code for the "triangle flags" - see here for details. Insertions that are not studied yet and which are available for ordering are shown in green as before.
2009-11-10 Delivery of some old requested lines While working on the improved detection of "contamination groups" (see FAQ 10), we found a number of seed requests in which users did not order all members of the respective contamination group (FAQ 10). Most of these lines are now already at NASC, but we are sending out emails that tell about the availability of the requested insertion allele, although this allele has been confirmed in a line that has not been ordered.
2009-11-09 Update of the SimpleSearch GABI-Kat data browser under way The update will address mainly the accessibility of information regarding insertions which failed in our confirmation process. Insertions that are known to show up several times in different lines and which go back to the same allele ("contaminations", see FAQ entry No 10) are linked to the corresponding confirmed line. The graphic view page shows which insertions are already confirmed & donated to NASC (blue), and which insertions failed to confirm (red). Insertions that are not studied yet and which are available for ordering are shown in green as before. This color-code is used on the search-result pages as well. In the transition phase it may happen that not all new features work as expected.
2009-10-21 New donation of GABI-Kat seeds to NASC A total of 99 newly confirmed GABI-Kat lines have been donated to NASC. This donation batch contains 1.388 individual T3 seed bags (99 T3-sets). In total, 7.724 T3-sets of which each represents a single GABI-Kat line have been donated so far. One line, which turned out to be a false-positive, has been retired at NASC.
2009-09-18 Starting September 2009, we can accept payment by credit cardAfter many years of continued effort, we can now also accept payment by credit card. Only VISA and MASTER are possible, but that's better than before! The details of the procedure are described in FAQ entry No 25.
2009-08-31 New donation of GABI-Kat seeds to NASC A total of 98 newly confirmed GABI-Kat lines have been donated to NASC. This donation batch contains 1.447 individual T3 seed bags (98 T3-sets). In total, 7.626 T3-sets of which each represents a single GABI-Kat line have been donated so far.
2009-08-24 Recovery from vacation time The delays in delivery of seed of confirmed lines and in Email replies to questions sent to the info mailbox caused by holidays are being almost resolved. Quite some seed will leave the lab this week.
2009-08-12 New donation of GABI-Kat seeds to NASC A total of 200 newly confirmed GABI-Kat lines have been donated to NASC. These two donation batches represent 200 T3-sets and 1.450 plus 1.296 = 2.746 individual seed bags. In total, 7.528 T3-sets of which each represents a single GABI-Kat line have been donated so far. These lines cover 7.624 confirmed insertion alleles.
2009-07-20 Slow service due to vacation time Since a part of the GABI-Kat staff goes to vacation, delivery of seed might be a bit delayed between end of July and middle of August. The delay may also extend to answering Emails send to the info mailbox, as well as to taking up new seed requests.
2009-07-19 New donations of GABI-Kat seeds to NASC Since last month, the total number of GABI-Kat lines donated to NASC has been increased to 7.328. In these lines, there are 7.423 confirmed insertion alleles. The respective allele-specific confirmation sequences are available via SimpleSearch. You can check this page as an example; to reach this page for your favorite gene, start with a gene ID (AGI code) or line ID (e.g. 048E04) query on the SimpleSearch start page. Between June 30th and July 16th, 4 donation batches representing 399 T3-sets were sent to NASC for distribution.
2009-06-17 New donation of GABI-Kat seeds to NASC A total of 121 newly confirmed GABI-Kat lines have been donated to NASC. This donation batch represents 121 T3-sets and 1.699 individual seed bags. In total, 6.929 T3-sets of which each represents a single GABI-Kat line have been donated so far.
2009-06-15 GABI-Kat has been extended to run until end of June 2011 The GABI-Kat grant has been extended until end of June 2011. Thanks to PTJ / BMBF (German Ministry of Education and Research) for funding, and to the GABI SAB (Scientific Advisory Board) for support.
2009-04-07 New donation of GABI-Kat seeds to NASC A total of 143 newly confirmed GABI-Kat lines have been donated to NASC. This donation batch represents 143 T3-sets and 1.852 individual seed bags. In total, 6.808 T3-sets of which each represents a single GABI-Kat line have been donated so far. Since some lines contain two confirmed insertions, there are 6.896 GABI-Kat insertion alleles available from NASC. The total number of individual seed bags donated to NASC is 96.234.
2009-02-19 New donation of GABI-Kat seeds to NASC A total of 255 (two batches with 157 and 97 lines, respectively; the latter already at 2009-02-12) newly confirmed GABI-Kat lines have been donated to NASC. These two donation batches represent 255 T3-sets and 3.425 individual seed bags (2.011 and 1.414, respectively). In total, 6.665 T3-sets of which each represents a single GABI-Kat line have been donated so far.
2009-02-18 Another extension of GABI-Kat proposal to be submitted shortly The presently running GABI-FUTURE-Kat II grant from PTJ / BMBF (German Ministry of Education and Research) will terminate at 2009-06-30. We are now submitting another extension proposal to continue the service to the community for another two years. We still get between 50 and 70 insertion allele requests each month. One problem to be addressed is the reduction of the germination frequency of the now almost 10 years old seed stocks. Obviously, a line and the respective insertion(s) is lost when the T2 seeds that we have in stock do not germinate any more. In addition, there are still some insertions that are of interest in terms of genome coverage, even though we have already confirmed and donated most of the lines/alleles that cover mutations in genes for which mutations are not available from other populations (in Col background).
2009-01-28 New donation of GABI-Kat seeds to NASC A total of 98 newly confirmed GABI-Kat lines have been donated to NASC. This donation batch represents 98 T3-sets and 1.340 individual seed bags. In total, 6.411 T3-sets of which each represents a single GABI-Kat line have been donated so far.
2009-01-21 Update of the GK website due to switch to Joomla v1.5 The GABI-Kat website has been refreshed visually in the context of the move from Joomla version 1.0.x to version 1.5. "Joomla!" is the content management system (cms) we use to maintain the site.
2008-12-12 New donation of GABI-Kat seeds to NASC A total of 100 newly confirmed GABI-Kat lines have been donated to NASC. This donation batch represents 100 T3-sets and 1.369 individual seed bags. At NASC, the individual seed bags are counted as "lines". In total, 6.313 T3-sets of which each represents a single GABI-Kat line have been donated so far.
2008-11-25 Web server maintenance on November 26th 2008 The GABI-Kat website will not be functional for several hours between 8:00 and 12:00 CET. The reason is a major software and hardware maintenance on the central CeBiTec web servers.
2008-11-18 GABI-Kat has been extended to run until end of June 2009 The presently running GABI-Kat grant has been extended for another 6 months. Thanks to PTJ / BMBF (German Ministry of Education and Research)!
2008-10-08 SimpleSearch was not working SimpleSearch and our other interactive web tools (weborder, request tracking, etc.) did not work for about 24 hours. The problem has been fixed.
2008-10-01 New donation of GABI-Kat seeds to NASC A total of 195 newly confirmed lines have been donated to NASC. These GABI-Kat lines represent 195 T3-sets and 2.831 individual seed bags. At NASC, the individual seed bags are counted as "lines". This is why you will find at the NASC website something like "... to view all 88500 of these lines", although there are only about 6.200 T3-sets of which each represents a single GABI-Kat line.
2008-09-17 Proposal for a short extension of GABI-Kat submitted The presently running GABI-Kat grant will end in December 2008. A proposal to extend until June 2009 has been submitted.
2008-08-22 Ticket system for the info email address at GABI-Kat closed In order to reduce the workload for maintenance, we have stopped using OTRS (see FAQ 33) for coordinating incoming email at info
2008-08-04 Slow service - maybe stop of service soon Since GABI-Kat is operating only because of funding from PTJ / BMBF (German Ministry of Education and Research), GABI-Kat obviously requires an active grant. As you know, such grants have a limited duration. The current grant runs out at the end of 2008. The postdocs that were running the project over many years (Yong Li and Mario Rosso at last - many thanks to both of them!) had to look for new positions. Both have been successful (Yong in April and Mario in July), which means that there is currently no postdoc working for GABI-Kat. This explains why the service has been quite slow recently. GABI-Kat is running since the year 2000. We will try to get another extension, but ... you know about grant proposals! If there is no extension, we will stop taking new orders in September 2008.
2008-05-14 Server downtime Because a hacker attack to our web server was detected and defended, the server was down for several hours.
2007-12-19 Delivering seeds delayed to January 2008 We have quite some confirmed lines waiting for delivery. However, since the coming holidays may interfere with international delivery, these seed will be put into the mail in the second week of 2008. We wish all our users a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year, and GREAT phenotypes for the experiments in 2008!
2007-11-30 SimpleSearch database updated We have released version 23 of the database. Due to the identification of lines that are not viable the total number of lines is slightly reduced (see FAQ 13). Donation of lines to NASC has continued. Now, 5551 confirmed lines are available from the stock center as sets of T3 seed from individual T2 plants. In addition, some lost links between FSTs and line IDs could be repaired. Such "lost links" (wrong assignment of FST to line) are caused by handling errors during the initial steps of line and FST production that require hand work.
2007-10-02 GABI-Kat web site has a new look We have moved the GABI-Kat web site to a content management system (Joomla!), and the site got a new design. Also, the content on some pages has been updated. Using Joomla! makes it much easier to maintain and update the content of the web pages. A few of the PHP pages that are "talking" to the SimpleSearch database stay at the moment with the old design. When accessing these pages, they will be opened in new browser windows. If you find any errors on the new site, please let us know.
2007-02-12 Administrative changes cause delay in delivering seeds Due to the change in the place at which GABI-Kat is conducted, there is currently a delay in delivering confirmed lines. The reason are the administrative changes connected to the move of the GABI-Kat project. We hope that the situation will improve in 2 - 3 weeks.
2007-01-02 GABI-Kat moved from MPIZ Cologne to Bielefeld University The GABI-Kat project has been extended to the end of 2008. In addition, the project moved from the MPIZ in Cologne to Bielefeld University. Starting from January 2007, all plant work, lab work and paperwork is done at Bielefeld University. Please check our website for changes in the next weeks!
2005-06-24 GABI-Kat T-DNA insertion lines will become freely available In short: - Seeds of confirmed GABI-Kat lines are to be transferred to NASC. - Lines still to be confirmed are available from GABI-Kat for a fee of 100,- EUR per line after signing a disclaimer. - More details are available here.
